Richard Kirwan employs vibrant colour and hard-edged geometry to create paintings which hover between chaos and control. Repeated motifs create rigid grids and matrixes whilst scattered structures hint at the impossibility of their randomness.

Kirwan has exhibited his work with Bridget Riley, Robyn Denny and Kenneth Martin, suggesting the link between painters of the 1960s with contemporary painting practice.

For the first solo exhibition presented at Marksman Gallery, a series of new paintings depicting ‘heaped’, ‘stacked’ or ‘piled’ forms contrast with paintings employing an ‘all-over’ geometric structure.

Forthcoming solo projects in 2006 include exhibitions at Ausstellungsraum, Zurich, Switzerland and Galerie Hollenbach, Stuttgart, German
