The
Marksman gallery is pleased to announce the first exhibition of
new work by Greek artist Sotiris Panousakis, made possible through
an international association with The Apartment gallery, Athens,
Greece.
‘The neon sign of a railway station canteen or the closed
bars of a basemen leather shop in Thessaloniki may seem like mundane
images to spur one’s creative vision... Panousakis’s
paintings explore disguise and transformation: Public spaces are
made to feel like private domains and commercial signs appear
like abstract shapes.’ – Herald Tribune, Greece
His new works obtain imagery from such diverse sites as railway
stations, shopping centers or the fluorescents of a fairground.
These sites easily seduce the viewer into a play of consumption
of goods, images, lifestyle. The paintings are based on photographs;
each photo is cropped, edited, deconstructed and manipulated.
Colours are reformed appearing more transient and unstable. The
final painting becomes in the artist’s own words “a
representation of a representation.
